Photography and Editing With Cat

Hi everyone! My name is Catarina and I am a games SA. Some of you may have seen me with a camera taking some photos for events. In photography, It's all about composition and lighting to help create a great photo. I am here to give you a couple of tips and tricks on how to improve your photography skills.

1. Focus on something you want to capture then frame your shot.

When taking photos, have a look around and find anything that captures your eye. It could be objects, people, nature, city landscape, and many more. Once you have a subject, start framing and think about the composition that will tell the story and its mood. Make sure the subject is in focus so that the audience knows where to look at.

2. Take plenty of images from different angles and see if there are any areas that you can improve.

Take the opportunity to take various photos from different angles as you may need to change the settings on the camera like exposure, shutter speed, and aperture. During that time check through your images and see what areas could be improved or could have been taken differently to help them standout. The more you continue doing this, the more you will start to improve and understand a lot about composition and lighting.

3. Use various objects to help create effects and framing.

Using props/objects can make an impactful photo as it can create depth, reflection and effects to the image. Here are some examples:

  • Fairy Lights - Bokeh

  • Crystal ball - Creates reflections

  • CD - refraction of light that can create a beautiful technicoloured effect

  • puddles/Phone screen - Create reflections

  • Edit your photos

4. Edit your photos Using Photoshop/Lightroom or other editing software can make a difference in the style you want to create. You can straighten the image, colour grade it to the mood and story you want to have, or even clone out areas that could be distracting.

5. Last but not least, Have Fun!

In the end, it's all about having lots of fun with your friends or when you are exploring. You will be able to enjoy yourself and improve a lot on the way!
